"Wednesday morning, I was just so pissed at this razor-thin race, right? It was going to be so close, you know, with all these polls — and it’s a wipeout."
Two-time Oscar winner Michael Douglas acknowledged Friday that President-elect Donald Trump has made the Republicans the “party of the people,” while the Democrats are increasingly perceived as being “elitist.”
The actor was a guest on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” where guests discussed Trump’s stunning victory in the Nov. 5 presidential election.
“Wednesday morning, I was just so pissed at this razor-thin race, right? It was going to be so close, you know, with all these polls — and it’s a wipeout,” Douglas said. Breitbart reported that he told the audience that he decided to play golf for the rest of the day.
Douglas said the Democrats never seemed to understand that the election was all about the economy and how average Americans felt the party had abandoned them. “In 40 years, the stock market has increased 5,000 percent and real earning wages have increased 14 percent,” Douglas said, noting how so many people “are going week to week with the inflation; it is killing them.”
“And I think we really underestimated it, and the very fact now that we can talk about Republicans as being the people - the party for the people, and that we have this elitist party on the left, Democrats, is wild." Maher said that this was "crazy," but that there was "truth" to it.
Douglas, a lifetime Democrat as his father, Kirk Douglas was, staunchly denied that President Joe Biden was experiencing any cognitive decline during his administration. Breitbart News reported that the star defended Biden against accusations that he was showing serious signs of dementia, even using the cliche of the president being “sharp as a tack.”
“Well, I think that I walk a little similar to him [Biden]. And the people that I’ve talked to and everybody that I have say he’s sharp as a tack. He’s fine,” he said.
Douglas co-hosted along with his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, a gala fundraiser for Biden in April. The pair gave the Biden Victory Fund $100,000.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) also apparently thought the Democrats lost their perspective during the election campaign with too many “fake politicians.” Biden was forced out of the presidential race by former House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-NY) and Pelosi has acknowledged that she has not spoken to the president since that episode. After offing Biden, Pelosi went on to claim that Vice President Kamala Harris had won the nomination in an “open primary.”
