“A lot of voters really don’t like fake people, and they’re sick and tired of fake politicians.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) shared some videos Monday night, with the Squad member staring directly into her phone and delivering what appeared to be a dressing down to her own Democratic Party for being rife with “fake politicians.”
Ocasio-Cortez was commenting on the results of last week’s presidential and congressional elections that saw President-elect Donald Trump take both a solid majority in the Electoral College and the popular vote. The Republicans also took back majority control in the Senate and retained their majority in the House of Representatives. It was not a good night for Democrats and AOC said she thinks voters were sounding off about their need for authenticity.
“A lot of voters really don’t like fake people, and they’re sick and tired of fake politicians,” she began.
“What I actually think is worse is saying something you don’t believe. If during the entire time of the campaign season, you’re saying that you’re down with trans people or the LGBT community and then you lose an election and then the next day you say all that stuff was wrong, I actually think what people are more upset about is someone was doing something they didn’t believe and just saying something. If you actually weren’t about that life, why did you campaign as though you were?” she said. “That I think is the actual core issue of the problem.”
But AOC has effusively praised Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff for being an ideal male that “we should all be really, really proud of” despite mounting accounts against Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband.
“He’s not afraid to embody and pass on these values of security and this idea that you can, you can let your girl shine," Ocasio-Cortez told students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. "And he embodies that really well. We should all be really, really proud of him."
