Cancel Culture continues to permeate western society and ruin lives. Toby Young is not stranger to this phenomenon. As Founder & Director of The Free Speech Union, Toby is at the centre of this discussion in the United Kingdom.
It is difficult to understand cancel culture until it happens to you. Cancel culture itself is a device to silence your opponents. In Toby's case, a gaggle of activists became upset when he was appointed to a board by then Prime Minister Theresa May. This led to a coordinated effort to find a cheeky tweet from 10 years ago and besmirch Toby's name.
2020 was a tumultuous year and certainly had its fair share of cancel culture. Just recently, we saw Penguin House employees enraged at the idea that the publisher would sign a book deal with Jordan Peterson. They all called for the deal to be terminated, but their attempts to cancel Peterson failed. It is evidently true that when this mob fails to cancel you, they quickly pack up and move to the next target. This may perhaps be one of the means to defeating cancel culture. Simply, do not give credence to any sort of mob.
Toby Young
Toby Young is a British writer and commentator. He is also the Founder and Director of The Free Speech Union.
Two years ago, when Theresa May was still the prime minister of the United Kingdom, the Conservative Party appointed Toby Young as a member of the Board of the Office for Students. Despite it being an unpaid position, Young quickly accepted it, and yet within a few days, he had not only lost that job but four others.
This cancel culture campaign led to Toby becoming a vocal critic of censorship and a proponent for free speech. His organization is the preeminent free speech organization in the United Kingdom. The Union helps those who are in need of protection from censorship mobs, as well as provides potential legal services.
