An illegal immigrant has been arrested following a deadly crash on Florida’s Turnpike that left three people dead after he attempted to make an illegal U-turn in a semi-truck.

The crash happened around 3 pm Tuesday near Fort Pierce. The driver was identified as Harjinder Singh, who entered the US illegally in 2018 after crossing the southern border. Singh has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and is being held on an ICE detainer.

Singh was driving a semi-truck in the right lane when he attempted to make a U-turn at a turnaround marked “official use only” for emergency vehicles only. Singh was driving in the right lane and made the U-turn attempt despite a minivan being in the left lane. The minivan was unable to slow down in time and crashed into the truck. Dashcam footage showed Singh showing no emotional reaction as the minivan collided with his vehicle.

According to WFLA, two passengers in the minivan died at the scene. The driver, a 30-year-old man, was taken to a hospital where he later died. The passengers were identified as a 37-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man. Singh and his passenger were uninjured.

“The actions taken by the Defendant while operating a commercial tractor-trailer are both shocking and criminal,” said Dave Kerner, Executive Director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. “Three people lost their lives as a result of his recklessness, and countless friends and family members will experience the pain of their loss forever. Harjinder Singh is in custody on state vehicular homicide charges and immigration violations. He will no longer be able to damage and destroy the lives of Floridians and visitors.”

Florida authorities confirmed that after Singh finishes serving time in the state for his charges, he will be deported.
