In a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, registered voters prefer former President Donald Trump over Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election, with Trump garnering 48 percent support compared to Biden at 45 percent and Independents favoring Trump by 50 percent, 9 points over Biden at 41 percent.

The poll's results show that among registered voters, 53 percent disapprove and 42 percent strongly disapprove when asked about "the way Joe Biden is handling his job as president." 91 percent of Republicans, 16 percent of Democrats, and 51 percent of Independents said they disapprove.

On the issues, 61 percent of registered voters disapproved of the "way Biden is handling the immigration situation at the U.S.-Mexico border." 46 percent disapprove of how Biden has dealt with the war in Ukraine. 59 percent of registered voters "disapprove of the way Biden is handling the economy."

ABC reports, "After Trump's first year, just 13 percent felt worse off financially. That spiked to 35 percent under Biden a year ago, and its level now, 41 percent, is the most measured in 33 ABC/Post polls since September 1986."

"Biden's approval rating after two years in office is well below average compared with the previous 13 presidents," according to the outlet.

When asked, "How would you feel if Biden is re-elected as president in 2024?" 62 percent of registered voters said it would be a net negative if Biden was voted into a second term.

When asked the same question about Trump, 56 percent said it was a net negative with 43 percent noting it would be net positive. Biden received 36 percent net positive support.

16 percent of registered voters answered that they were better off when asked "Would you say you, yourself, are better off financially than you were when Biden became president?"

Two years into Trump's presidency 25 percent said they were better off.

Broken down by party, 12 percent of Democrats polled said they had become worse off under Biden compared to 72 percent of Republicans. 38 percent of Independents also said they are worse off under Biden.

81 percent of Democrats approve of Biden's handling of his job with just 6 percent of Republicans and 45 percent of Independents saying they approve.

Among voters who lean Democrat, when asked "Would you like the Democratic Party to nominate Biden to run for a second term as president in 2024, or would you like the Democratic Party to nominate someone other than Biden as its candidate for president?" 58 percent wanted someone other than Biden, and 31 percent wanted him for a second term.

Among voters who lean Republican, when asked the same question about Trump, 49 percent wanted someone other than him, and 44 percent wanted the former president to be nominated again.

The poll sampled 1,003 adults and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
