The Internal Revenue Service has done away with the entire team tasked with investigating Hunter Biden via a tax fraud probe. The move comes just weeks after a whistleblower from within the IRS came forth, suggesting that the department had attempted to cover-up the first son's tax evasion with the help of a "senior" Biden administration official, later alleged to be Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Lawyers for the whistleblower, who has only been identified as a "career IRS Criminal Supervisory Special Agent who has been overseeing the ongoing and sensitive investigation of a high-profile, controversial subject since early 2020," sent a letter to Congress suggesting that the IRS' decision to axe investigative team was "clearly retaliatory."
"Today the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Criminal Supervisory Special Agent we represent was informed that he and his entire investigative team are being removed from the ongoing and sensitive investigation of the high-profile, controversial subject about which our client sought to make whistleblower disclosures to Congress," lawyers Mark Lytle and Tristan Leavitt wrote.
They noted that the whistleblower was informed that the IRS' decision was made "at the request of the Department of Justice."
Lytle and Leavitt went on to slam IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel, pointing out that on April 27, he appeared before the House Committee on Ways and Means and testified that, "I can say without any hesitation there will be no retaliation for anyone making an allegation or a call to a whistleblower hotline."
"This move is clearly retaliatory," the lawyers stated, "and may also constitute obstruction of a congressional inquiry."
The whistleblower's legal team urged Congress to act, suggesting that, "removing the experienced investigators who have worked this case for years and are now the subject-matter experts is exactly the sort of issue our client intended to blow the whistle on to begin with."
When the whistleblower first came forth with his allegations, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said it was "deeply concerning that the Biden administration may be obstructing justice by blocking efforts to charge Hunter Biden for tax violations."
