First Lady Jill Biden stopped in Ukraine on Sunday for a surprise Mother's Day trip. She met with refugees on the other side of the Slovakian border, before crossing over to meet with Ukranian First Lady Olena Zelenska.
"I wanted to come on Mother’s Day," Biden told reporters.
"I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war has to stop and this war has been brutal and that the people of the United States stand with the people of Ukraine."
According to Fox News, this is Zelenska's first public appearance since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February. She and the rest of her immediate family, aside, of course from her husband, the president, "have remained in an undisclosed location due to safety concerns as Moscow made it a priority early in the invasion to try and assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his family."
President Joe Biden has not been to Ukraine, despite having announced intentions to do so.
Other high-profile US officials have also visited Ukraine recently. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have both entered Ukrainian territory since the start of the war.
