One police officer died and two others were wounded following a shootout in Memphis, Tennessee early Friday morning.

While an 18-year-old suspect was also killed in the interaction, another 17-year-old was promptly apprehended and taken into custody and was also injured.

"A total of three officers were struck by gunfire," Interim Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis said during a press conference. "Tragically, one of our officers lost his life."

She went on to identify the officer as Joseph McKinney, a four-year veteran of the force.

The 18-year-old suspect who also lost his life was not identified, though Davis explained that he had been arrested in March driving a stolen vehicle while carrying a firearm that he had illegally converted to be fully automatic.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
