Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) announced he will resign from his position in Congress, effective April 19, 2024.

"After conversations with my family, I have made the decision to resign my position as a member of the House of Representatives for Wisconsin's Eighth Congressional District effective April 19, 2024," he wrote in a statement. "I've worked closely with House Republican leadership on this timeline and look forward to seeing Speaker Johnson appoint a new chair to carry out the important mission of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party."

"I will forever be proud of the work I did on the Armed Services and Intelligence Committees, chairing the Cyberspace Solarium Commission, and chairing the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. It has truly been an honor to serve in the House of Representatives," Gallagher added.

The announcement drew ire among conservatives online because if Gallagher were to resign immediately, a Republican could fill the spot.

Instead, Gallagher opted to wait to resign, which will delay an election until November, cutting the Republican majority even slimmer in the House.

With this following the announcement of Ken Buck’s resignation, Republicans in the House will be number 217-213 Democrats. The GOP would only be able to afford losing any votes if the Democrats vote together on an issue.
