Trump holds a one-point lead in Wisconsin and a three-point lead in both Georgia and North Carolina.
New polling between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris shows the race is much tighter in battleground states from when President Joe Biden was still on the ticket.
According to a poll by CBS News/You Gov, Harris and Trump are tied in the collective battleground states. Harris is also performing slightly better than Trump nationally, with a narrow lead of one point, 50 percent to 49 percent. When third-party candidates are included, Harris’ lead extends to two points
In the battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Arizona, Trump and Harris are tied. Trump holds a one-point lead in Wisconsin and a three-point lead in both Georgia and North Carolina. In Nevada, a state that has leaned blue in recent elections but where Trump was polling well against Biden, Harris has a two-point lead.
The poll found that the gender gap appears to be widening since Harris is set to be the Democratic Party's nominee. 54 percent of female likely voters chose Harris as their pick for president, while 54 percent of men selected Trump.
When asked how Harris' policy positions compare to President Joe Biden's, 64 percent of registered voters said their policies are "mostly the same." 18 percent believe they are "entirely the same."
On the issue of immigration, 52 percent of registered voters stated that border crossings would increase if Harris wins the presidency. An overwhelming 72 percent of voters, however, believe that border crossings would decrease if Trump secured a second term.
Regarding abortion, a political topic that Harris has prioritized in her campaign, 68 percent of registered voters said Harris would try to make abortion legal in all states. 35 percent of voters believe Trump would try to make abortion illegal in all states, while 49 percent stated that he would leave the issue up to the states to decide. Trump has stated explicitly that he would leave the decisions up to the states while Harris has said she would back a federal law to codify Roe v. Wade, the court decision that was overturned via Dobbs.
Trump continues to poll well on the issues relating to the economy. 45 percent of voters said that they would be financially better off if Trump were to win in November. Harris only received 25 percent of voters who answered the same about her. Additionally, 44 percent said they would be financially worse off if the VP were to become president.
When asked to describe the two candidates, most respondents selected the terms "energetic" and "focused" to describe Harris and used "tough" and "energetic" to describe Trump.
The poll surveyed approximately 3,100 registered voters from July 30 to August 2 and has a margin of error of 2.1 percent.
