Kentucky man found not criminally responsible for 6-year-old’s death—released from custody

A Kentucky man who fatally stabbed a 6-year-old boy in his sleep but was found not guilty by reason of insanity was released from prison on Wednesday.

Ronald Exantus was released from the Kentucky Department of Corrections following the December 7, 2015, home invasion that claimed the life of Logan Tipton. Exantus broke into the family’s home and stabbed Logan’s father, Dean Tipton, and his two sisters. He told one of the sisters he intended to kill the entire family, and fatally stabbed Logan as the child slept.

Exantus, a former dialysis nurse, was charged in the attack but was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity after his defense argued he was genetically schizophrenic. Although he was acquitted of the murder charge, he was convicted on assault charges involving the three surviving family members and, in 2018, was sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison.

While in prison, Exantus received almost nine years of sentence credit, which sped up the amount of time he was required to serve. In October 2025, Exantus was released on parole but was quickly rearrested after failing to register as a convicted felon and violating his parole. He was then extradited to Kentucky to serve the remainder of his sentence before being released on Wednesday.

“The judge and jury gave this monster a slap on the wrist while handing down a life sentence to my family,” Dean Tipton wrote on Facebook on Wednesday. 

“Trying really hard to not let this break me….I’ve carried so much over the years since Logan going to be with our Lord. I have woke up everyday, put on my fake ass smile and have carried on with life and literally living through hell. Today though, I’m having a hard time trying to figure out how to go on with life. Knowing that this monster gets to walk free and live his life, while I lay in this bed and my baby boy is in the grave. This may be my breaking point,” he added.

While Exantus was in prison, Kentucky’s state legislature passed Logan’s Law, which amended the state’s parole eligibility for violent offenders, revised procedures involving the insanity defense, and eliminated certain early-release options, according to the New York Post. However, it did not retroactively apply to Exantus’ sentence.

“So I’ve come to terms that even though we got Logans Law passed it is still not enough,” Tipton wrote in another social media post. “Violent criminals should not be able to knock so much time off their sentence.

“So this is my next goal. Im going to fight to have the amount of time limited and considering on how Violent the crime is no time being knocked off. Our judicial system as a whole needs to be over hauled and I am gonna fight for more change,” he said.
