House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Saturday promised to investigate New York City DA Alvin Bragg after Donald Trump announced that he anticipates an upcoming arrest on Tuesday over a Manhattan case that alleges he paid hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels in the lead up to the 2016 presidential election.
"Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump. I'm directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions," McCarthy tweeted.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social and said, "Now illegal leaks from a corrupt & highly political manhattan district attorney's office, which has allowed new records to be set in violent crime & whose leader is funded by George Soror, indicate that, with no crime being able to be proven, & based on an old & fully debunked (by numerous other prosecutors!) fairytale, the far & away leading Republican candidate & former President of the United States of America, will be arrested on Tuesday of next week. Protest, take our nation back!"
The case against Trump involves the accusation out of New York City DA Alvin Bragg's office that Trump falsified business records and that his company accounted for $130,000 to be paid to Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen, who acted as a money passthrough to Stormy Daniels.
Trump has denied the charge which Bragg has elevated to the status of a felony, which means the NYC DA has attached an "intent to defraud" motive to the accusation.
Bragg may also try to charge Trump with a violation of New York State election law and say that the $130,000 was an illegal donation to Trump's campaign. Under that charge the allegation would be that the hush money directly benefited Trump's election bid.
Bragg advocates for cashless bail, pushes his office to downgrade felony charges for suspects, and has sought to negate prison sentences whenever possible.
