Manhattan's District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, is delaying and hindering an investigation into what NYPD officials describe as a gang that is targeting and murdering gay men around New York City's Hell's Kitchen area.
The New York Post reports, "a gang that preys on gay men at Hell’s Kitchen nightclubs is suspected of killing at least two victims and of drugging and robbing more than a dozen other men — but Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office is impeding the investigation."
The NYPD were investigating the serial killings of two gay men who were murdered under similar circumstances. Reports emerged that each man had been spotted with three unidentified men hours before they were killed. The murders happened two blocks apart and were separated by five weeks. One detail of the MO is that both men reportedly died of a drug overdose from being "roofied."
Both men were described as "well-heeled" and when they were discovered their phones were missing and "their bank accounts had been emptied of tens of thousands of dollars."
Bragg's office has not warned the public of a possible serial killer targeting gay men in the NYC area.
33-year-old John Umberger, a political consultant from Washington, DC, was one victim and his mother, Linda Clary, has spoken out about the death of her son.
"I can’t be quiet anymore," she said, "Word needs to get out, especially in the gay community, that they are targeting gay men… This same group of killers have drugged, robbed and murdered countless young gay men in New York."
She explains how the three unidentified men went back to her son's Upper East Side townhouse around 3:15 am but then were seen leaving without him 45 minutes later. A little after 5 am someone responded to text messages to his phone and Clary is confident it was the suspects.
Over $25,000 was taken from Umberger's bank accounts through Venmo and Paypal.
25-year-old Julio Ramirez, a Brooklyn social worker, was murdered 5 weeks before under nearly identical circumstances and was robbed of over $20,000 with the same MO.
Both Ramirez and Umberger were spotted in Hell's Kitchen's nightlife spots the nights of their murders.
Clary recorded a message asking voters to cast their ballot for Lee Zeldin, as he has promised to fire Bragg on day one of his administration.
"Lee Zeldin has promised to restore safety to New York and to fire District Attorney Alvin Bragg on day one. This election may be the last opportunity to hold my son’s killers accountable," she said.
Overall crime is up 34.4 percent across New York City and has been surging at rates as high as 50 percent since 2020. Felony assaults in New York are up 17 percent.
Bragg advocates for cashless bail, pushes his office to downgrade felony charges for suspects, and seeks to negate prison sentences whenever possible.
