If the Republican Party regains control of the House next term, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said that Representative Ilhan Omar should be stripped of her committee spot over the congresswoman's recent statements.

In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, McCarthy said that Omar should be held accountable for recent comments, and that she should be stripped of her position on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

McCarthy is currently pushing for a resolution in the House to do so, although likely to fail in the Democrat-controlled House, with fellow representatives coming to Omar's defense.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to condemn Omar's remarks in a press conference last week, stating that "I think that she ... clarified her remarks, and that was ... we ... accepted that ... and she .... she has a point that she wanted to make, and she has a right to make that point."

"I will promise you this: If we are fortunate enough to have the majority, Omar would not be serving on Foreign Affairs [Committee] or anybody that has an antisemitic, anti-American view," said McCarthy.

"That is not productive, and that is not right," he continued. Omar came under fire last week after comparing the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban.

"We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity," Omar wrote on Twitter last week. The post included a video of her questioning Secretary of State Antony Blinken. "We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban."
