House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was asked during a press conference on Friday whether she thinks "any further action should be taken" regarding Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN)'s recent comments comparing America and Israel to Hamas.
"No, no I don't," answered Pelosi.
"I think that she... clarified her remarks, and that was... we... accepted that... and she.... she has a point that she wanted to make, and she has a right to make that point."
"There was some unease about how it was interpreted; she made her clarification," concluded Pelosi.
Omar—along with her comrades in "The Squad"—have made a string of statements condemning Israel in the days before and since the cease-fire was declared between Israeli and Hamas forces on May 20 2021, according to the UN.
Among other things, they have called Israeli military action "an act of terrorism" ,and called Israeli society "an apartheid system" which commits "state violence".
Pelosi's refusal to weigh in on Omar's rhetoric appears to be par for the course for the Democratic caucus. Omar's fellow Democrats have been reluctant to speak out against her, with only 12 of the 219 sitting House Democrats condemning her posture, despite her having compared Israel and America to Hamas and the Taliban.
