Fox 11 Los Angeles' Bill Melugin posted Saturday on Twitter a video showing Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon being rude to a mother of a murder victim.
In the initial tweet and the follow-ups which explain the details of what's going on, Melugin says:
"BREAKING: We've obtained video of LA D.A. George Gascon at the Pomona courthouse today where he can be heard saying "It's unfortunate that some people do not have enough education to keep their mouth shut so we can talk" as the family of a murdered victim yells at him."
"Sources tell me the woman yelling is the mother of Joshua Rodriguez, who was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered in 2015. Special circumstances were recently filed on the accused killers, which will be dropped under Gascon's new policy, which takes life w/out parole off."
"I have reached out to George Gascon's team for a comment on this video. I've initially been told he wasn't aware they were family members of victims yelling at him when he made this comment, and thought they were just hecklers. Waiting on a formal statement. Will update."
An update came a little while later when a response was given by Gascon's team, which was attributed to Gascon. He says that he was not aware that the individuals he was in a confrontation with were family members of victims.
"While speaking to colleagues outside of the office there were individuals yelling on opposite sides of the crowd. I did not understand what they were yelling about until later, let alone that they were victims. Regardless, it's not how I should have reacted. Clearly this family is in pain, and I will be contacting them to speak directly and hear them out. The defendants in this case are all facing life in prison."
