Following weeks of receiving letters containing death threats, a member of French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen's National Rally was shot while in a suburb of the city of Lyon.

On Monday, Enzo Dubois said he was in the Lyon suburb of Saint-Priest when he was shot at while getting out of his car.

"When I got out of my car, I received a blow in the back of the head," said Dubois, according to Le Dauphiné.

"I turned around and saw two individuals facing me, one of whom was armed with a rifle which he was reloading. By reflex, I protected my face with my suitcase. A second shot went off," he said, according to an English translation.

Dubois said he took shelter until police arrived to intervene.

According to Breitbart, the weapon involved in the attack in believed to be a pellet rifle. Dubois said he was invited to the Lyon police station to file a formal complain, and said an investigation is underway.

"I am aware of the danger, I know that the threat hangs over me. But that's not why I'm going to renounce my political beliefs," he said.

In the weeks leading up to the attack, Dubois said he had been receiving death threat letters to his house, one of which contained minced meat inside and stating: "The letter explicitly said I was going to look like this. And that they were going to cut my throat."

The attack comes less than a year after Antifa members repeatedly beat 49-year-old National Rally activist Benoît Glotin, who was hospitalized after they fractured his ankle. Glotin was in the commune of Saint-Nazaire that day handing out party leaflets, according to Breitbart.
