A 69-year-old man has been charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct after he allegedly sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl at a "family-friendly" nudist colony in Minnesota.
Steven Wicklund of Pepin, Wisconsin, is set to appear in court on January 12. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
According to the Star Tribune, the incident took place while the girl was on holiday with her grandparents at the Oakwood Club in July, which bills itself as a place where people of all ages can practice "non-sexual" nudity.
While the teen was alone in a sauna with Wicklund, who had been decribed as a family friend, he allegedly began touching her inappropriately, eventually digitally penetrating her.
When she told him to stop, he proceeded to grab her hand and place it on his genitals, telling her what they were doing was "fine and normal."
Wicklund's abuse is said to have carried on via text message long after the teen and her grandparents left the colony, and it was only then that the situation was uncovered by her parents.
As the Star Tribune reports, the teen's mother contacted authorities after discovering texts on her phone from Wicklund in which he asked her to send sexually explicit pictures of her and her friends, all of whom were minors.
When her mother brought up the texts, the teen admitted that she had been groped and penetrated by Wicklund and forced to touch him inappropriately as well.
The Oakwood Club has not publicly commented on the matter.
On their website, Minnesota's first nudist club says "this is where like-minded friends gather to enjoy the many documented benefits of social nudity, including greater life satisfaction, more positive body image and higher self-esteem."
In the FAQ section, there are instructions on what to do if men "get visibly excited." They say that "on the rare occasion when this occurs, simply cover with a towel, turn over, or take a quick dip in the pool."
The club adds that "unwelcome advances" do occur, but only "rarely."
