Manhunt underway after Indiana judge, wife shot in Lafayette home

Police are searching for a suspect after a Tippecanoe County judge and his wife were shot and wounded inside their Lafayette, Indiana, home.

On Sunday, Tippecanoe Superior Court 2 Judge Steven Meyer and his wife, Kimberly Meyer, were shot at their Mill Pond Lane residence, according to the Lafayette Police Department. Both victims are in stable condition.

Lafayette police said officers were dispatched to the home shortly after 2 pm Sunday and found the couple suffering from gunshot injuries. Investigators said Steven Meyer sustained an injury to his arm, while Kimberly Meyer was injured in her hip. Shell casings were recovered at the scene, but as of Monday night, the shooter is at large.

Authorities have not released a motive, but details from a 911 recording suggest the attack began at the front door. In the recording, the caller reported hearing a knock, followed by someone saying, “We have your dog,” before a shot was fired through the door.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff Robert Goldsmith told CBS News that extra security would be added at the courthouse for the foreseeable future.

Kimberly Meyer said in a statement, “We have great confidence in the Lafayette Police Department’s investigation and want to thank all the agencies involved for their work. We are also incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from the community; everyone has been so kind and compassionate. We would especially like to thank the medical personnel who provided care and assistance to us following the incident.”

Chief Justice Loretta Rush called the shooting “completely unacceptable,” adding, “I worry about the safety of all our judges,” and urged vigilance while the investigation continues. She also asked for prayers for the Meyers’ recovery.

Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski stated, “I want to ensure the community that every available resource is being used to apprehend the individual(s) responsible for this senseless and unacceptable act of violence.”
