"The dating equivalent of boomers saying just walk into Goldman Sachs with your resume and a 'firm handshake.'"
A Salt Lake City husband and father of five drew a range of reactions to a viral post on X that some derided as “out-of-touch,” “misogynist,” and “boomer”-coded on how to pick up women.
Chris Hatch, a commercial real-estate developer and podcaster, urged young men to clean up their acts by putting down the video games, getting better haircuts, cleaning their cars, and taking showers in order to woo women.
“I am surrounded by 20 year old girls in my life that are smart, capable, hard working and cute,” he wrote. “Nobody is dating them. Not sure what the deal is, but I don’t get it.”
Hatch’s observation follows alarming trends that have shown birth rates on the decline over the past two decades. In 2025, fertility rates hit what was, at the time, an all-time low of 1.6 children per woman.
Even among women who chose to have children, the rate of those who opted to do so without husbands was on the rise.
NPR reported in January that 44 percent of women were single and that the use of in-vitro fertilization as an alternative to traditional conception methods was fast increasing.
Hatch advised potential suitors to begin casing yoga classes for prospective girlfriends.
“Ask a cute for her phone number at yoga class (yes you can meet girls IRL and not just on the apps - 10/10 the Dirt Dog highly recommends,” he wrote, referencing his online handle @DirtDog.
However, some criticized the pick-up method as a fast track to a permanent ban or restraining order.
Others said the advice seemed antiquated and reductive, failing to address the complexities of the modern world.
“The dating equivalent of boomers saying just walk into Goldman Sachs with your resume and a 'firm handshake',” wrote Jeffrey Ye.
But others praised his romantic sentiment, including bringing flowers.
Some said that even men who were not looking for a monogamous relationship might prosper from heeding the advice.
“Sounds like a great way to get taken advantage of by the modern women with a triple-digit body count,” wrote user @AI_EmeraldApple.
Others similarly noted that the issues did not only lie with men, but also with women who were forcing unfair standards onto their prospective dating pools.
“Guys have learned by that age that cold approaching girls marks them as ‘creepy,’” wrote conservative blogger Peachy Keenan. “When they try it once and get rejected, get an eye roll, or get told they're too short, not whatever, to their face, they will never cold approach again.”
Another user urged women to put in the effort, as well.
“Stop getting tattoos. Men want women. Not pirates,” wrote user @bookshelfbattle in one of his 10 suggestions to females.
The broader debate comes amid recent controversy over a Cornell University student’s allegations of a “gangbang” sex assault involving seven men at one of the school’s fraternities.
Critics, including some of the accused men themselves, have pushed back on the claims, alleging that the woman solicited the sexual contact and, in some cases, initiated it without consent.
