Josh Turek, an Iowa state lawmaker and former Paralympic gold medalist in basketball, defeated GOP hopeful Ashley Hinson on Tuesday in another Democratic seat flip to replace retiring Republican Sen. Joni Ernst.
Turek’s victory came on a night when Democrats pounced on voter frustration over persistently high cost-of-living and possible Trump fatigue to open up new pathways in what may customarily have been seen as a red firewall in America’s heartland.
But even as most polls projected solid Democrat advantages going into election night, the Iowa upset was a stunner for many.
Turek appeared poised to draw a decisive majority as Hinson trailed by roughly four points with more than 90 percent of the votes tallied.
Libertarian candidate Thomas Laehn drew about 3 percent of the vote, but did not prove to be a spoiler in the race.
Iowa, despite being a solid red state most of the time, briefly garnered attention during the 2024 race after a shock poll from Iowa pollster Ann Selzer put Democrat Kamala Harris in the lead.
After winning the state by a 10 percent margin, President Donald Trump mused about suing Selzer for her alleged election interference.
However, Turek’s success now calls into question just how reliable it may be in future races as the political landscape rapidly shifts.
