In a deeply personal op-ed in The New York Times, Meghan Markle opened up about details surrounding a miscarriage that resulted in the untimely loss of her second child.

What started as a normal day at home ended in unexpected sorrow. She recalls waking up in a hospital bed, holding her husband’s hand, and knowing that there was no way to undo her loss.

It was, as she put it, "carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few."

The Duchess of Sussex has largely evaded the public eye since her and her Husband, Prince Harry, left the royal life of the United Kingdom to start a new chapter of their own—apart from the court of Queen Elizabeth II. Markle, in a shocking turn, broke months of silence to tell audiences about one of the most deeply personal subjects imaginable.

It's not without reason.

Markle's story is more than a look into her personal life; it's an exhortation to readers to take the time to look for and see those hurting and suffering. In a time where the whole world is engaged in a fight against COVID-19 and where many face deep national division, Markle encourages audiences to look past the surface and address the underlying—and often unseen—needs of the people around them.

It's a sentiment Markle hopes will bring people together this holiday season.

"This Thanksgiving, as we plan for a holiday unlike any before — many of us separated from our loved ones, alone, sick, scared, divided and perhaps struggling to find something, anything, to be grateful for — let us commit to asking others, 'Are you OK?' As much as we may disagree, as physically distanced as we may be, the truth is that we are more connected than ever because of all we have individually and collectively endured this year."
