“I ask our community to pray for the family of our fallen deputy, to pray for all of us because we are a family, and we are hurting.”
Devin Jaramillo, 27, was fatally wounded during the altercation and later died from his injuries. The shooting occurred shortly before 4 pm. According to the Miami Herald, Steven David Rustrian, a 21-year-old involved in the collision began arguing with the deputy, and the interaction turned physical. The individual was able to grab Jaramillo's gun and shot him several times.
Bystanders called 911, and responding deputies provided aid before rushing him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Rustrian, after shooting the officer, went into his own car and fatally shot himself.
At a news conference, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said the deputy was “brutally attacked, and he was murdered.”
“Today is not ok. What happened today in Miami-Dade County and to our deputy was not ok, and today will never be ok,” Cordero-Stutz said. “I ask our community to pray for the family of our fallen deputy, to pray for all of us because we are a family, and we are hurting.”
"He gave his ultimate sacrifice defending us — his life — defending you,” she continued. “We need to say as a society we will not accept this. I’m grateful to the men and women who provide safety to our community every single day.”
In a post on X, the sheriff added, “My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow deputies during this difficult time. Deputy Jaramillo’s legacy of integrity, compassion, and courage will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.”
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava also issued a statement at the time of the shooting expressing condolences, saying, “Our entire community stands with this brave officer, his family and fellow deputies, and all our men and women in uniform who put themselves at risk to protect our community.”
