New research performed by the UK's Hull York Medical School has shown trace amounts of microplastics embedded deep in the lung tissue of living human beings for the first time ever.

These results coincide with those of another equally shocking recent study. Previously, The Post Millenial had reported on these tiny plastic particles also having been conclusively found in live humans' bloodstreams.

They have also previously been found in samples culled from human cadavers, according to NPR. The outlet quoted Dr. Laura Sadofsky, the lead researcher identified in the published results:

"We did not expect to find the highest number of particles in the lower regions of the lungs, or particles of the sizes we found," stated Dr. Sadofsky, going on to indicate that the results were not expected:

"This is surprising as the airways are smaller in the lower parts of the lungs, and we would have expected particles of these sizes to be filtered out or trapped before getting this deep into the lungs," Dr. Sadofsky elaborated.

The study was performed by harvesting lung tissue "from surgical procedures on patients as part of their routine medical care," and found 12 different types of microplastics across the totality of the samples collected.

These plastics found in human bodies could possibly come from a wide range of regular-use plastics, including bottles, wrapping and packaging, clothing, and even the lines and nets used to catch fish in the oceans.
