One sticker on the journal reads “Defend Equality,” featuring an image of a machine gun imposed on top of a pride flag. Others display the Nintendo character Luigi, a reference to Luigi Mangione — the man who assassinated UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last year.
As reported earlier, Westman uploaded disturbing videos to YouTube prior to the attack, lacing them with pop culture allusions and tributes to notorious mass killers. In the recordings, Westman is shown handling several firearms and ammunition magazines, alongside a target board affixed with an image of Jesus Christ.
Westman declares, “This message brought to you by BlackRock and Exxon Mobil, sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon” near the beginning of the video. The footage has since circulated widely online. According to police, the rampage left at least two children dead and 17 people injured — 14 of them minors — when gunfire erupted at a Catholic school during morning mass.
Investigators report that Westman’s weapons were scrawled with slogans, extremist rhetoric, and nods to past shooters. Among the inscriptions were:
“KAYNBRED” — an apparent reference to the online alias of Sandy Hook gunman Adam Lanza.
“I’m the Woker, baby, why so queerious?” — a parody of the Joker’s line, “Why so serious?”
“Я террорист” (“I am a terrorist”) written in Cyrillic.
“Я комбин” (“I am combine”) — seemingly intended as a Columbine reference.
“Where is your God now?” — a phrase drawn from Psalms 42 and 115.
Investigators also documented a list of mass killers’ names etched onto the firearms, including:
Pekka-Eric Auvinen (Finland, 2007): Perpetrator of the Jokela school shooting, which killed eight.
James Holmes (Aurora, 2012): Responsible for the Colorado theater attack that killed 12 and injured 70.
Adam Lanza (Sandy Hook, 2012): Killed 20 children and six staff at an elementary school in Connecticut.
Vladislav Roslyakov (Kerch, 2018): Attacked a polytechnic college in Crimea, leaving 20 dead.
Charles Whitman (Texas Tower, 1966): Opened fire from the University of Texas clock tower, killing 15.
Marc Lépine (Montreal, 1989): Murdered 14 women in an anti-feminist attack at École Polytechnique.
Anders Breivik (Norway, 2011): Killed 77 people in coordinated attacks in Oslo and on Utøya island.
Robert Bowers (Pittsburgh, 2018): Targeted worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue, killing 11.
Brenton Tarrant (Christchurch, 2019): Carried out mosque attacks in New Zealand, killing 51.
Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow (Madison, 2024): Opened fire at a Christian school, killing two and wounding six.
Ted Kaczynski (“Unabomber”): Conducted a mail bombing campaign between 1978–1995, killing three.
Additional writings on the weapons and explosives included song references, extremist slogans, antisemitic slurs, and threats against former President Donald Trump.
