Between 150-200 members of the National Guard have tested positive for coronavirus since being called to protect President Joe Biden's inauguration, Reuters reports.

Biden's inauguration hosted the largest gathering of American servicemen on US soil in American history, more than at any point during the Civil War. The troops were summoned to the inauguration following the deadly riot at the Capitol on Jan 6.

More than 25,000 troops were deployed to Washington DC as a security precaution, a move which was heavily criticized as unnecessary and permeated by paranoia. Most of the troops are still present in the US capital, with the military saying that at least 7,000 will still be there by the end of January.

5,000 of those troops are also expected to remain in the capital well into March.

The National Guard claims that they cannot discuss coronavirus cases among their ranks, but assured the public that their troops are taking all necessary health precautions.

More than 25 million Americans have contracted coronavirus since the start of the pandemic according to official statistics, and over 415,000 have died as a result.
