"Once again turning Madison Square Garden into a staging ground for extremism."
The MSNBC host, speaking over the clips from a Nazi rally and Trump's playing back and forth, said to viewers that Trump holding the rally there was "particularly chilling because in 1939, more than 20,000 supporters of a different fascist leader, Adolf Hitler, packed the garden for a so-called pro-America rally." The footage of the Trump rally was spliced with old Nazi footage.
"When a Jewish protester rushed the stage, the Associated Press reported, 'Instantly a dozen or more stormtroopers set upon him, knocking him down and beating him as he held his head in his arms. Most of his clothing was torn from his body. Later, he was booked for disorderly conduct,'" the MSNBC host stated.
He then compared the two rallies and said that Trump's rally is "once again turning Madison Square Garden into a staging ground for extremism." Despite many other events being held at the Garden after 1939 Nazi rally, including numerous rallies for Democrats, including FDR and Bill Clinton, the news network made the comparison with the Trump rally. Both Democratic and Republican National Conventions have been staged at MSG over the years.
The DNC projected "Trump praised Hitler," up on the side of the building of the MSG building exterior during the former president's rally on Sunday, per CBS News.
The quote was in reference to a statement made by disgruntled former chief of staff for Trump, John Kelly, who told the Atlantic last week that Trump "praised" the Nazi leader. The report, however, has been brought under heavy scrutiny for uncorroborated allegations about the GOP nominee. Many who did not get fired by Donald Trump when they worked in his administration have debunked Kelly's claim.
Many conservatives and Trump supporters wrote scathing responses to the comparisons, with Elon Musk even writing, “Wow, MSNBC is utter scum of the Earth.”
Conservative and women’s rights activist Riley Gaines wrote, in a tongue and cheek manner, “Obama last week: ‘How did things get so divisive?’ MSNBC last night.”
