Greene argued that Omar had "revealed herself to be a foreign agent acting on behalf of a foreign government."
On Thursday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced a resolution to censure fellow congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota over comments she made regarding her alleged allegiance to Somalia.
Greene suggested that Omar's words were "treasonous," and demanded that she be censured and removed from her committee assignments.
"Whereas elected members of Congress take an oath to bear true faith and allegiance to the United States without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion," Greene began, "on January 27, 2024, Rep. Ilhan Omar gave remarks at an event in Minneapolis in which she made treasonous statements."
Greene accused Omar of having said that she had spoken with a number of Somalians who wanted her to "pressure the US government into certain actions," and that Omar, in turn, told them that "the US government will only do what Somalians in the US tell them to do ... They must follow our orders and that is how we will safeguard the interests of Somalia."
The Georgia congresswoman went on to quote from one translation of Omar's speech in which she said, "Sleep in comfort knowing I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the US system."
"These statements by Rep. Omar clearly violate the oath she took as an elected member of Congress to defend and protect the United States' Constitution," Greene declared, saying her colleague "exhibited the treasonous tendencies George Washington warned about."
She argued that by "openly admitting her efforts to advance Somalia's interests using her position as a US representative," Omar had "revealed herself to be a foreign agent acting on behalf of a foreign government."
"Therefore," Greene concluded, "be it resolved that Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota be censured ... and ... removed from the committee of the budget and the committee on education and the workforce."
Despite backlash, Omar has defended her statements on X, saying certain translations were "slanted" by "propagandists."
