"In light of the attached notification by the Sergeant-at-Arms, in consultation with the Office of Attending Physician, that a public health emergency is in effect due to a novel coronavirus, I am hereby extending the 'covered period' designated on January 4, 2021, pursuant to section 3(s) of House Resolution 8, until December 25, 2022," a press release from Pelosi stated.
Remote voting was put in place on January 4 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then the practice has been extended several times, most recently in late September 2022. The current extension was set to expire on Thursday.
Pelosi cited a notification by the Sergeant-at-Arms that the public health emergency remains in effect as her reason for extending the "covered period."
"Pursuant to section 3(s) of House Resolution 8, following consultation with the Office of Attending Physician, I write to provide you further notification that the public health emergency due to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 remains in effect," the letter from Sergeant at Arms William Walker reads.
House minority leader Kevin McCarthy has pledged to eliminate remote voting if the midterm results give the Republicans the House majority. While the final results are yet to be tallied, the GOP are leading the Democrats by a significant margin and it is looking increasingly likely that they will take the House.
In a letter sent out to House Republicans on Thursday in which McCarthy announced his bid for House speaker, he vowed to put an immediate end to remote voting in the Hosue chamber.
"We will immediately reopen the Capitol and end the Democrat proxy voting and remote work schemes that have inflicted untold damage to this institution," his statement read.
