New Jersey Democrat Senator Bob Menendez will resign from office after being found guilty in his corruption trial, according to sources close to the situation who spoke with NBC News

On Tuesday, Menendez was found guilty of 16 federal counts, including bribery, extortion, obstruction of justice, and acting as an illegal foreign agent. He was indicted last September alongside his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez.

The couple was accused of receiving bribes from Egypt as well as three local associates and businessmen, Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes. The DOJ stated at the time that Menendez and his wife "agreed to and did accept hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes in exchange for using Menendez's power and influence as a Senator to seek to protect and enrich Hana, Uribe, and Daibes, and to benefit the Arab Republic of Egypt.”

Menendez has been receiving calls from numerous Senate democrats to resign from office following the indictment. Immediately after he was found guilty, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated, “In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign.”

Should Menendez step down, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will appoint a new senator to temporarily finish out Menendez's term, which ends in January. Murphy was one of the first Democrats to call for Menendez to resign amid the scandal. Currently, Democratic representative Andy Kim and Republican Curtis Bashaw are running in the November election to take over Menendez's seat in the Senate.
