Mayo declared in his first press conference, "I do see color, because I believe if you don’t see color you can’t see racism."

Following Bill Belichick leaving the New England Patriots as head coach last week, a press conference was held on Wednesday to formally introduce Jerod Mayo as his replacement.

In this press conference, Mayo declared, "I do see color, because I believe if you don’t see color you can’t see racism."

Mayo added, "Whatever happens, Black, White, disabled person - even someone with disabilities, for the most part people are like - when they're young, they kind of make the spot hot. Younger people know what that means. But what I would say is, no, I want you to be able to go up to those people and really understand those people. It goes back to whatever it is, Black, White, yellow, it really doesn't matter, but it does matter so we can try to fix the problem that we all know we have."

Mayo was named the 15th head coach of the New England Patriots after a 24-season run with Belichick. Mayo has been touted as the team’s first black head coach.

Sports Illustrated wrote on Wednesday, "With the introduction of Jerod Mayo - who replaces six-time Super Bowl winner Bill Belichick - the Patriots finally broke the color barrier. Mayo becomes the NFL's youngest head coach at age 37, and its fourth Black coach…"

The outlet said that team owner Robert Kraft "downplayed Mayo's skin color" at Wednesday’s press conference in Gillette Stadium, but added that Mayo "tackled the topic of race with full force."

"I'm really color blind," said Kraft in the press conference. "I want to get the best people I can get. I chose the best head coach for this organization. He happens to be a man of color. But I chose him because I believe he's best to do the job."

Mayo’s comments were criticized on social media, with Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk writing, "New England Patriots' new Head Coach Jerod Mayo lets white NFL players know they should avoid playing for him."

"Actually if you don’t see color, you can’t PRACTICE racism. I don’t think Coach Mayo is going to win six Super Bowls," he added, referencing the wins under Belichick’s leadership.

Citizen Free Press wrote, "The New England Patriots have officially changed its name to the New England Marxists."

Canadian professor Gad Saad wrote, "Everything that the DIE cult touches dies."

DIE is a rearrangement of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), an initiative that has come under fire in recent months over concerns on the qualifications of candidates in fields.

One DEI training at the University of Washington required white employees to learn how to be “antiracist” and forced them to provide examples of their so-called white privilege and fragility.

Employers are now attempting to rebrand DEI policies following the resignation of Harvard President Claudine Gay, who advocated for the DEI approach and was one of the three Ivy League presidents who refused to categorize calls for the genocide of Jews as harassment during a congressional hearing in November.

Overall, US companies were revealed to have spent $8 billion on DEI programs in 2020, a point that accelerated the adoption of such policies following the death of George Floyd and companies taking on the values of Black Lives Matter.
