During President Joe Biden's State of the Union address on Thursday, when speaking about Jose Ibarra, the illegal immigrant charged in the murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, he used the term "illegal" to describe him. On Friday he rephrased after backlash from Democrats and instead said, "technically he’s not supposed to be here.”
“Lincoln Riley!” Biden said in the address. “An innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal. That’s right. But how many of the thousands of people being killed by illegals? To her parents, I say, my heart goes out to you having lost children myself. I understand.”
Democrats grew angry at the president for using the term to describe those who enter the country illegally by coming across US borders.
Congressman Chuy Garcia criticized the president after the SOTU address, posting, "As a proud immigrant, I'm extremely disappointed to hear President Biden use the word 'illegal.'"
In an AP interview with “Squad” member Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who is also chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, she responded to the comments, “I wish he hadn’t engaged with Marjorie Taylor Greene and used the word illegal.”
Fellow squad compatriot Rep. Ayanna Pressley told the outlet, “Just like we should not be implementing Republican policy, we should not be repeating Republican rhetoric.”
Rep. Delia Ramirez went so far as to say Biden used “dehumanizing right wing rhetoric” to describe the suspected murder and other criminal illegal immigrants and added, “No human being is illegal."
