NEW: Sen Manchin refuses to endorse Kamala after she vows to 'eliminate the filibuster' to force abortion law

"I think that basically can destroy our country and my country is more important to me than any one person or any one person's ideology...I think it's the most horrible thing."

Senator Joe Manchin has said that he will not be endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for the White House after she said she would gut the filibuster in order to bring back the abortion protections of Roe v Wade.

According to CNN reporter Manu Raju, after Harris made her support for eliminating the filibuster on Tuesday known, Manchin commented, “Shame on her. She knows the filibuster is the Holy Grail of democracy. It’s the only thing that keeps us talking and working together. If she gets rid of that, then this would be the House on steroids.”

On Tuesday, Harris said, “I think we should eliminate the filibuster for Roe, and get us to the point where 51 votes would be what we need to actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom and for the ability of every person and every woman to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do," per Politico

Manchin said that he will not be endorsing Harris for the presidency: "I think that basically can destroy our country and my country is more important to me than any one person or any one person's ideology...I think it's the most horrible thing."

Taking away the filibuster would lower the threshold from 60 votes to a simple majority of 51 in the Senate in order to advance abortion protections or any other legislation. It is a legislative rule that incentivizes Senators in Congress to come to consensus when crafting laws instead of in the House where laws can be pushed through with a simple majority.

Manchin previously voiced support for a "mini-primary" when Joe Biden dropped out of the race. He has been critical of the Democratic Party for being too far to the left and has registered as an independent in recent months.
