On Thursday, Judge Tanya Chutkan held the first hearing in the January 6 case against 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump since the Supreme Court’s July 1 immunity ruling. In the hearing, Trump attorney John Lauro entered a not guilty plea on behalf of his client. Trump was not present for the hearing.

Chutkan confirmed Trump’s plea, to which Lauro responded, "That is right," CNN reported. Chutkan said, "I will consider his arraignment for the superseding indictment to be complete."

Special counsel Jack Smith filed a superseding indictment against Trump on August 27, charging him with the same four counts present in the original 2023 indictment, but tailoring it to the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling in which they said that a president does have absolute immunity for his core constitutional powers, though not for unofficial acts.

A court filing on Tuesday stated that Trump would be pleading not guilty, and that he would be waiving "my right to be present at Arraignment."

Chutkan said in the hearing that there were two questions to address that day, one regarding how to resolve the immunity issue, and the other on what the schedule will look like.
