Trump said that there is “no room left for Mexico or for Canada” to avoid them through negotiations.
Trump told reporters at the White House, “Tomorrow — tariffs 25% on Canada and 25% on Mexico. And that’ll start." The tariffs are meant to put pressure on Canada and Mexico to stop the flow of fentanyl trafficking into the US.
Trump said that there is “no room left for Mexico or for Canada” to avoid the tariffs through negotiations when he was asked about the topic by reporters.
The president originally said the tariffs would go into effect in February, but then gave the neighboring countries a month's time to negotiate and step up security to stop the illicit drug.
"Vast amounts of fentanyl have poured into our country from Mexico, and as you know, also from China, where it goes to Mexico and goes to Canada," Trump added in his remarks at the White House.
During the briefing Trump emphasized other points with the tariffs, and said that they will be used to prevent the US from getting taken advantage of economically.
"It's going to very costly for people to take advantage of this country. They can't come in and steal our money, and steal our jobs, and take our factories, and take our businesses, and expect not to be punished. And they're being punished by tariffs," he commented.
In addition to the tariffs set to take place this week, Trump has announced reciprocal tariffs to go into effect on April 2, implementing a tax on imports from countries that are doing the same to goods from the US.
