New York City Mayor Eric Adams flew to Florida on Thursday to meet with President-elect Donald J. Trump at Mar-a-Lago just days before the inauguration.

The Democratic mayor did not announce the trip in advance, but according to The New York Times, his aides said the two men would discuss “New Yorkers’ priorities” when they meet on Friday. Both men are born and raised New Yorkers and spent their careers working to better the city, Adams as a prosecutor, Trump as a real estate mogul.

Last week, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) met with Trump at his Florida resort and earlier this month liberal prime minister of Canada Justin Trudeau flew down to meet with the president-elect.

The outlet reported that the mayor requested the meeting for a "city purpose.”

Trump and Adams have grown publicly closer since the mayor was indicted last year on federal corruption charges. Adams has claimed that the investigation and indictments are political retribution for his criticism of outgoing President Joe Biden’s immigration policies. Trump previously stated he would consider a pardon for Adams.

The mayor’s spokesman Fabien Levy said, “Mayor Adams has made quite clear his willingness to work with President-elect Trump and his incoming administration on behalf of New Yorkers — and that partnership with the federal government is critical to New York City’s success. The mayor looks forward to having a productive conversation with the incoming president on how we can move our city and country forward.”

Though Trump is from New York, in 2019 he changed his primary residence from Manhattan to Palm Beach, FL.

In the 2024 election, New York City moved more conservative, as did the rest of the state. Since Trump’s victory, Adams has repeatedly stated that he wanted to work with the president-elect, and not be at odds with him.

Adams also previously met with Trump’s incoming “border czar” Thomas Homan to discuss deporting illegal immigrants who had committed crimes in the city.
