Protesters including one elderly man with a walker were restrained with zip ties and taken away by the NYPD.
Video footage from Timcast reporter Elad Eliyahu showed Sliwa and his supporters protesting in front of Creedmoor Hospital, where a tent shelter for migrants has been set up and opened Tuesday on the grounds of the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, in an attempt to address the flood of illegal immigrants that have come to the Big Apple. The new site is expected to host approximately 1,000 adults.
Protesters chanted “No tent city!" and carried signs criticizing the city's Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat who has seen his "sanctuary city" suffer under the Biden administration's failed border policies. Some 10,000 illegal immigrants flood into the city every month. More than 100,000 have come to New York already in 2023.
Sliwa and other protestors, including one elderly man with a walker, were restrained with zip ties and taken away by the NYPD after refusing law enforcement’s orders to get out of the middle of the street.
During a press conference earlier this month, Adams said there is no more room for them to stay in the city.
"Our next phase of this strategy, now that we have run out of room, we have to figure out how we're going to localize the inevitable that there's no more room indoors. Here's where we are right now. Yes, there were people sleeping in cooling vans. There were people along the sidewalk. We have to localize this madness. We have to figure out a way of how we don't have what's in other municipalities where you have tent cities all over the city."
According to Fox 5, The Roosevelt Hotel, which has been used to house illegal immigrants, is at full capacity. Pictures and videos have shown the illegal immigrants sleeping on the sidewalk outside the hotel.
