WATCH: Democrats shout Rep Jena Powell down in the Ohio state house—to stop her from speaking for women’s rights

On June 24, Powell described the "Save Women's Sports Act," originally SB 187 as Amendment 1594, on the floor of the Ohio legislature. As she began speaking about the importance of letting women and girls compete amongst each other fairly, Democrat opponents repeatedly banged their fists on their desks, yelled, booed, and disrupted Powell's reading.

Powell said, "The Save Women's Sports Act is a fairness issue for women to be able to achieve their dreams and athletics in our state. It's crucial to preserving women's rights and the integrity of women's and girls sports. Across our country, females are currently losing scholarships, opportunities, medals, education, and training opportunities. This amendment will require schools that are part of the OHSAA to designate separate teams for participants of the biological sex. No school interscholastic conference or organization that regulates interscholastics shall permit biological males to participate on athletics teams or in athletic competitions designated for biological female participants."

In response to Powell, Democrat Rep. Michael Skindell booed and banged on his desk to prevent Powell from being heard on the matter of women's rights.

The amendment, which is controversial among Ohio lawmakers, was attached to a bill "Name, Image, & Likeness," which would allow college athletes to profit from the use of their name and image. Lawmakers claim the bill didn't pass because they didn't like the amendment attached to it.

This is just one of many similar bills that would preserve the right for women and girls to play on an equal playing field in athletics. So far, 37 states introduced similar bills this year. Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, West Virginia, Montana and Florida all have new laws on the books—Louisiana's law is on the Governor's desk to sign.

It is appalling to see the immature, disruptive way in which Democrat lawmakers tried to disrupt Powell's description of the importance of fairness in girls and women's sports. Why are Democrat lawmakers so invested in making sure girls and women compete against biological males in sports? Furthermore, why aren't more women supporting lawmakers like Powell, who are simply standing up for the basic human rights of women and girls to be treated fairly and equally on the playing field?

All people, whether girls or transgender athletes should be treated fairly in America. They should and do have equal rights under the law. The increasing wave of leftists who advocate for transgender rights to the degree that they usurp the rights of females is anathema to equality and is abhorrent.

Was it not a bevy of women, full of righteous indignation, who secured the right for them to vote just a little over a century ago? Certainly just a few generations later, we have not forgotten females have fought for their own right to be seen and heard as equal to men—not greater than, but equal.

So it is with sports as well. Fairness in women's sports laws outline basic, decent, human rights that acknowledge the humanity of women and the inherent biological differences between men and women. Differences our society should applaud, not dilute. It is illogical and immoral for a handful of angry men to stand in the way of female equality because now male rights are hidden under a new name, a "transgender ban in sports." Shame on Ohio lawmakers and brava to the women and men who continue to lobby for fairness in female sports.
