11 arrested at violent Antifa protest outside Portland ICE facility

"It's been a hot second PDX so y'all better show the f— up," the Pacific Northwest (PNW) Youth Liberation Front posted in a since-deleted tweet to mobilize the Antifa mob. "Meet: 7 pm. Move: 8 pm. Be water, Spread fire, Melt ice."

Oregon has been ravaged by wildfires that killed at least eight people and burned more than a million acres.

Portland Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Olivia Katbi Smith explained why the protests were placed on pause to Willamette Week, citing “a climate emergency” and unprecedented wildfires that “created conditions that made street protest impossible.”

"Now that the air has cleared, protests will resume because our mayor has failed to heed the demands we've been making all summer: to defund the Portland police," Smith told WW in an email statement. "Resuming protests will also focus on [Immigration and Customs Enforcement], which is part of the police state under which we live—as so many crises escalate in the U.S., we must work to dismantle all parts of the system of racist, capitalist oppression."

Overnight, marchers proceeded to the ICE facility at 4310 South Macadam Ave and hurled projectiles at federal officers. Kermit Poulson, 42, is accused of breaking open multiple fire hydrants, causing water to spill all over the nearby streets. The gathering was quickly declared an unlawful assembly.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler confirmed on Saturday that Portland Police abided his order banning the use of tear gas, although the directive does not apply to federal law enforcement.

According to a Portland Police press report, officers took 11 suspects into custody and booked the following individuals into the Multnomah County Detention Center. All were released the next day without bail. Arraignment hearings are set for Sept. 21.
