Senator Bernie Sanders went on record Sunday to oppose a new Democrat plan to lower the income threshold for people eligible for stimulus checks.
The current debate on the Senate floor is whether the income cap should be lowered from $75k per year to $50k for people to be eligible for the new stimulus checks.
Many Senators consider that the checks, if they go out as things stand, would be given to too many people who have not had financial difficulty during the pandemic, people who earn a lot of money and have not lost their jobs, according to CNBC,
Right now, this issue is at the heart of the debate surrounding the hold up of the relief bill. Since the Republicans have unanimously manifested themselves as against the bill, the Democrats in the Senate need everyone onboard, including Sanders, to pass the bill.
"To say to a worker in Vermont or California or any place else, that if you’re making, you know, $52,000 a year, you are too rich to get this help, the full benefit, I think that that’s absurd," Sanders said on the Senate floor.
The package is hoped to be made into law before March 14, when the extended unemployment benefits which millions are currently receiving are set to expire.
