In the nearly two years since the events of January 6, 2021 at the Capitol building, the Department of Justice under President Joe Biden has been busy identifying, arresting, and punishing those who were involved.
Over 1,200 people have been apprehended in connection with the day thus far.
According to data from the DOJ reviewed by the Washington Examiner, by the end of 2023 nearly 850 years of prison time has been handed down to around 450 defendants. While the majority have received sentences of only a few days, others who committed more serious offenses that day now face years, and in some cases decades, behind bars.
Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who was not at the Capitol on January 6 but was charged with seditious conspiracy for an organizing role, received the longest sentence at 22 years. His co-defendants, Zachary Rehl, Joe Biggs, and Ethan Nordean, all of whom were Proud Boys affiliates, each received between 15 and 18 years in prison.
Per the Washington Examiner, at the other end of the spectrum are people like Indiana lawyer Quentin Cantrell. Aside from being disbarred by his home state, he was sentenced to just six days in prison, which he has been allowed to serve on weekends, for standing in restricted areas of the Capitol.
Infowars journalist Owen Shroyer received a 60-day sentence but was released early. He did not enter the building, but prosecutors said to he violated a previous deferred prosecution agreement that forbade the journalist from using "loud, threatening, or abusive language, or to engage in any disorderly or disruptive conduct, at any place upon the United States Capitol Grounds."
The majority of those who have been arrested were subsequently charged with entering or remaining in a restricted federal building or grounds, obstructing an official proceeding, assaulting or impeding police officers, and destruction or theft of government property.
The DOJ's actions have been widely criticized by a faction of the Republican Party, many of whom have decried the treatment of the January 6 defendants as unjust.
GOP lawmakers have criticized the DC jail in which J6 defendants have been housed, with Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene listing out accusations of abuse in a letter to DC Mayor Muriel Bowser.
"Eyewitness accounts of conditions at the DC Jail Facilities — particularly regarding the treatment of January 6 detainees — paint a picture of despair, hopelessness, and a severe abuse of justice. No prisoner in the United States should be treated in this fashion," the letter stated.
