Billionaire ex NYC mayor and former presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg has raised over $16 million to pay fines, fees and restitution for convicted felons so that they can get back on the voter rolls.
A spokesperson for Bloomberg's organization said: "The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy and no American should be denied that right. Working together with the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, we are determined to end disenfranchisement and the discrimination that has always driven it."
According to Axios, it is estimated that these funds will allow approximately 32,000 felons to vote, potentially in the upcoming November presidential elections.
All of this is in response to a 2018 Florida law allowing the right to vote to be reinstated for felons, provided that they pay all associated "fines, fees and restitutions" duly associated with their crimes. A recent appeal was decided a week ago, upholding the law.
In addition to Bloomberg's own money and fundraising efforts for the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, some television networks are donating money to the cause and promoting it. NBA player LeBron James also put in $100,000 personally to the organization and has been speaking out on the issue.
Bloomberg and others have also been actively campaigning for Democratic nominee Joe Biden. It is estimated that Bloomberg himself has donated over $100 million to the Biden campaign in an effort to defeat standing President Donald Trump at the polls.
