North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has suspended his 2024 Republican primary campaign.
"Our decision to run for President came from a place of caring deeply about every American and a mission to re-establish trust in America’s leadership and our institutions of democracy. While this primary process has shaken my trust in many media organizations and political party institutions, it has only strengthened my trust in America," Burgum said in a statement, according to the New York Post.
"We are deeply grateful for each and every person who supported us with their ideas, prayers, advocacy, encouragement and enthusiasm," he added.
The governor also criticized the Republican National Committee for its debate qualifying criteria, saying that "none of their debate criteria relate to the qualifications related to actually doing the job of president."
Qualifying criteria for the debate include minimum polling limits as well as a minimum level of unique donors.
This comes ahead of the fourth primary debate, which will take place on Wednesday. Burgum failed to reach the criteria for the third debate, which took place in early November.
Remaining in the field is frontrunner Donald Trump as well as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, and entrepreneur Ryan Binkley.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
