FBI agents confronted and then seized electronic devices from former Rep. Eric Swalwell at a San Francisco airport on Saturday as part of a probe into allegations against him related to sexual misconduct, according to the Daily Mail.
On Sunday, FBI agents also got a warrant and entered his home in Washington, DC to seize additional evidence, the outlet reported. According to sources familiar with the situation who spoke to the outlet, Swalwell was cooperative with the investigation.
The report comes after Swalwell resigned from Congress and exited the California governor's race after allegations about sexual misconduct surrounding him surfaced.
There are at least four women that have made claims of sexual misconduct against Swalwell , including a former staffer who claimed he has raped her two times while she was too drunk to consent to the action in 2019 and in 2024.
Another woman claimed that Swalwell raped her in 2018 after he drugged her. Two other woman have alleged that he sent them unsolicited pictures of his genitalia.
After the allegations surfaced, the Department of Justice launched an investigation into Swalwell in April. Swalwell, 45, was also being probed by the Manhattan DA's Office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He has denied any wrongdoing.
Since resigning from Congress and dropping out of the gubernatorial race, he has kept a lower profile. In addition to the reports on the FBI seizing his belongings, files from a previous investigation related to Swalwell were also released on Monday, showing that he admitted to hooking up with a suspected Chinese spy by the name of "Fang Fang."
Fang, previous to leaving the country while she was under investigation by the authorities, made her way to network through California politics and was found to have illegally donated to Swalwell's campaign, according to FBI records.
When the lawmaker resigned from his post in Congress, he stated, "I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I've made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me, however, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make."
"I am aware of efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against me and other members. Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong. But it's also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties," Swalwell added at the time.
