Following a multitude of women coming forward with allegations of sexual assault and harassment against Eric Swalwell, the Department of Justice has reportedly opened an investigation into the matter.
A source familiar with the matter confirmed the investigation to Fox News. Other investigations have been launched by the district attorneys for Los Angeles and New York over cases that took place in the cities. Swalwell has seen five women come forward with allegations about his conduct in recent weeks. Among the allegations against Swalwell is drugging and raping a woman and sexually assaulting a staffer. Swalwell has denied the allegations.
In the wake of the women coming forward, Swalwell has dropped his California gubernatorial campaign and has resigned from Congress. In a statement announcing his resignation, Swalwell said, "I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I've made in my past." While he denied the allegations, he said he "must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make."
Also amid the allegations, US Citizenship and Immigration Services said it has been collecting information on Swalwell regarding claims that he hired a Brazilian national to work as a nanny without proper work authorization. The agency said it has referred the matter to Department of Homeland Security law enforcement for investigation.
