A US Aegis warship was unable to intercept a test target in the form of a medium-range ballistic missile on Saturday.
The Missile Defense Agency, a branch of the Department of Defense, regularly conducts these types of missile defense tests. They are almost always an immediate success, and it has not been made clear why this wasn't the case this time.
For whatever reason, salvo of two Standard Missile-6 Dual II missiles (SM6), failed to intercept the target on this occasion, Reuters reported.
"The objective of the test was to demonstrate the capability of a ballistic missile defense-configured Aegis ship to detect, track, engage and intercept a medium-range ballistic missile target. However, an intercept was not achieved," the agency commented via press statement.
The MDA has not released any further information at this time regarding the test. Even the location of the test remains as of yet undisclosed.
