Canadian athlete takes on Chinese citizenship to compete for China in Olympics

Nina Shultz of Westminster BC has been known as a top Canadian athlete, but now, she will be known as a top Chinese athlete, and plans to compete in the Tokyo Olympics as such.
Shultz has been previously known for winning a silver medal at the Common Wealth games in the track-and-field area.
According to the National Post, Shultz's reasons for changing citizenships have to do with family, and have nothing to do with the current icy relations the two nations have on the world stage.
Shultz's grandmother on her mother's side is from China, and at one point held the world record for the high jump, and was set to compete for China in the Olympic games, but was unable to do so because of the Chinese government's boycott at that time.
Thus, Shultz plans to finish what her grandmother was unable to because of circumstances, competing for China in 2022.
Glenroy Gilbert, the head coach of Canada's track-and-field team, said, "Clearly, we saw her as a rising star in the heptathlon. We wanted her and tried very hard to get her to stay with Canada … but this was something she was firm on."
