Canadian Taxpayers Federation says Canada not doing enough to relieve inflation woes
The CTF report shows that while Canada has not done much, fifty-one other countries have provided tax relief for their citizens either during the pandemic or to “ease the burdens of inflation.”
Inflation has impacted nations the world over, with each taking different measures to relieve the burden on citizens dealing with rising costs of living.
A new report from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation found that the federal government has not followed suit. The group urged Trudeau to do more to help Canadians through these difficult times.

“The federal government could immediately make life a little more affordable for Canadians by reducing taxes,” the report reads, “but instead of providing tax relief, the federal government has recently increased the carbon tax, alcohol taxes, and payroll taxes.”
They point out that while Trudeau’s Liberals might not be providing relief at the federal level, many provincial governments have stepped in to reduce taxes.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, and Ontario, gas taxes were slashed by as much as 8 cents, while in Alberta the 13-cent per liter tax was scrapped altogether.
The CTF report goes on to highlight fifty-one countries that have provided tax relief for their citizens either during the pandemic or to “ease the burdens of inflation.”
Among them are over half of G7 nations, and two-thirds of those in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
In Germany, for example, where energy prices have become prohibitively high, gas taxes were cut by 30 cents per liter.
Poland went one step further, eliminating the value-added tax on basic foodstuffs, fertilizers, and natural gas.
The CTF are not the only ones calling on Prime Minister Trudeau to do more. On Tuesday, MP and recently elected Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre slammed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government over their handling of the situation.
“After two years of warnings by the Conservatives, the Trudeau government still doesn’t have a plan to fix inflation,” Poilievre lamented. “They’ve proposed legislation that prints more cash, borrows more money, and throws gasoline on the inflationary fire the Prime Minister created.”
