Dating app OKCupid adds ‘pro-choice badge’ for dating profiles

"At OkCupid, we support our users' right to choose," the company said in a statement on Monday.

Starting Wednesday, US users can chose to display a pro-choice badge on their profile "demonstrating [their] support of reproductive rights."

The company said it plans to donate $1 per every badge displayed to Planned Parenthood, up to $50,000.

"Given the new, radical Texas law that essentially bans abortion access, it's more important than ever to take a stand and we've found that our users want to be able to choose to filter for dates who are pro-choice more than they ever have before," said the company.

The Texas Heartbeat Act bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which usually occurs around the sixth week of pregnancy. After that point, those that perform or aid in abortions may have civil action brought against them by any person.

OkCupid said that this summer, there had been an 18 percent increase in users writing that they are pro-choice on their profiles in the US compared to last summer.

They also noted that there has been a 4 percent increase in users saying that Planned Parenthood should not be defunded by the government.

"Today, less than 9 percent of OkCupid daters who answered the question said they believed the government should 'defund' Planned Parenthood," wrote OK Cupid.

The company said that 88 percent of their users, or 87 percent of men and 89 percent of women, said that they are support abortion access.

In Texas alone, 87 percent of men and 95 percent of women said that they are "pro-choice," with mentions of "Planned Parenthood supporter" more than doubling in Texas profiles since last summer.

"Clearly, daters are interested in signaling their support of abortion access and reproductive rights to potential matches, and the new I'm Pro-Choice profile badge will make it that much easier," wrote OKCupid.

The company also announced that if a person choses to display the "pro-choice badge" on their profile, they can filter for other profiles displaying the badge with the "Pro-Choice Stack." That feature will be available "soon after" the badges go live.

"Because if you only want to match with people who are pro-choice, well, that's your choice!" OKCupid wrote.

"We expect daters in the Pro-Choice Stack to increase their likes up to 10x; when we released the #ISupportPP profile badge in support of Planned Parenthood several years ago, men with the badge got 9x more likes than those who didn't add it to their profile," the company added.

The company noted that those who display the badge may also be "9 percent more likely to have reported they are vaccinated with the I'm Vaccinated profile badge," "37 percent more likely to be concerned about climate change," and "Nearly 4x more likely to consider themselves a feminist."
