From Saturday through the following Saturday Jan. 23, Delta Airlines will not allow any firearms whatsoever on flights with Washington, DC as a destination.
The policy affects the four airports in or around the DC area, including Ronald Reagan, Dulles, Thurgood Marshall, and Richmond International Airports, and as an exception only includes law enforcement officers carrying the proper credentials for the DC area.
Washington, DC as a city already has the country's toughest gun laws, all but completely disallowing the carrying of firearms on the city's streets.
According to local outlet KARE11, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mentioned as well that passengers who will be coming through one of the above-mentioned airports can expect to come across increased police presence, including canine units.
In addition to additional security measures, the FAA will now no longer issue warnings to unruly passengers. Instead it will immediately ban such passengers, and initiate legal proceedings which can include heavy fines and jail time.
"We’re all on high alert based on the events over the last couple of weeks in Washington," commented Ed Bastian, the CEO of Delta.
